Isn't most floss already plastic-free?
No. Standard floss is nylon. The slippery "glide" style floss has historically been made with PTFE — the same material as non-stick cookware. Some brands have since reformulated, but plenty haven't, and it isn't always on the label.

Silk behaves differently to nylon, and the beeswax coating is there to help it slide rather than catch. If you have very tight contacts, ease it down slowly instead of snapping it through — that's what causes fraying with any floss.

No. Silk comes from silkworms and the coating is beeswax. Both are animal-derived.
